Free WHOIS History Lookup: Domain Ownership Records Since 1986
Look up the full registration timeline of any domain: every past registrant, registrar, nameserver, and contact change. Searches 3.8 billion records dating back to 1986, including pre-GDPR data with full registrant details.
Common questions about historical records, ownership changes, data depth, and API access.
What is Historical WHOIS Lookup?
Historical WHOIS Lookup retrieves every recorded WHOIS snapshot for a domain - going back as far as 1986. Each snapshot captures the domain's ownership, registrar, nameservers, and contact data at a specific point in time, allowing you to trace its full registration history.
Is WHOIS history lookup free?
The basic tool is free. Enter a domain and view a limited number of historical records without an account. For full paginated history, bulk lookups, or API access, sign up for a WhoisFreaks plan.
How far back does the historical data go?
The database starts in 1986 and covers 3847M+ WHOIS records across 904M+ tracked domains. Coverage is densest from the early 2000s onward; pre-2000 records exist mostly for older .com, .net, and .org domains.
Which TLDs are supported?
WHOIS history covers 1528+ TLDs, including all generic TLDs (.com, .net, .org, .info, .biz), most country-code TLDs (.co.uk, .de, .in, .jp, .ru, .br, etc.), and newer gTLDs (.io, .ai, .app, .dev, .xyz). The full TLD list is in the supported TLDs reference.
What does a historical WHOIS record contain?
Each snapshot returns parsed fields: registrant name, organization, email, phone, postal address (where not redacted), administrative & technical contacts, registrar name & IANA ID, nameserver configuration at the time of the snapshot, domain creation, last updated, and expiration dates, status flags such as clientTransferProhibited and the date the snapshot was collected. Pre-2018 snapshots usually contain full contact details. Post-GDPR snapshots may show "REDACTED FOR PRIVACY" in personal fields, depending on the registrar.
Who uses historical WHOIS data and why?
Common use cases include: cybersecurity investigations (tracing phishing or malware domain ownership), legal disputes (proving past ownership for trademark or fraud claims), domain acquisitions (researching a domain's full history before purchase), threat intelligence (correlating IPs and domains used by threat actors over time), and academic research.
Why is historical WHOIS useful for incident response?
When investigating a security incident, historical WHOIS provides a chain of custody - showing who owned a domain at the time an attack occurred. This data is admissible in legal proceedings and helps analysts attribute infrastructure to specific actors or campaigns.
Does GDPR affect historical WHOIS data?
Post-2018 records often contain redacted personal fields due to GDPR and registrar privacy policies. However, records from before 2018 frequently contain full registrant contact details. WhoisFreaks preserves all historically collected data, including pre-GDPR records, making the database especially valuable for investigations.
How many historical records can I view per query?
The free tool displays a limited number of historical records. API access provides full paginated results for all stored snapshots. See our API documentation for pagination parameters.
Can I use this tool to find who owned a domain before its current owner?
Yes. Enter the domain name and you'll see a chronological list of all recorded ownership periods, including past registrants, registrars, and nameserver configurations.
Is historical WHOIS data available via API?
Yes. The WHOIS History API allows automated, bulk access to historical records with filtering by date range. It's widely used in threat intelligence platforms and SIEM integrations.
