A DNS lookup queries the Domain Name System to retrieve resource records associated with a domain name or IP address. These records control how traffic is routed — mapping domain names to IP addresses, specifying mail servers, defining SPF policies, and more.

WhoisFreaks returns all 8 major DNS record types: A (IPv4 address), AAAA (IPv6 address), MX (mail exchange), NS (nameserver), SPF (sender policy), SOA (start of authority), TXT (arbitrary text), and CNAME (canonical name alias). For IP address lookups, the PTR (reverse DNS) record is returned.

An A record maps a hostname directly to an IPv4 address. A CNAME record is an alias that points one hostname to another hostname (which then resolves to an IP). CNAMEs are commonly used to point subdomains to a canonical domain, such as a CDN or SaaS provider endpoint.
